I was raised in Washington where mowing down big fir trees was the norm. I would go out and find where a tree had been cut down but when it was almost cut the tree snapped and then fell. Usually in the base of these trees where there was sticks of wood still sticking up. I would find pieces of wood that are almost solid pitch. I would cut them up and then carry pieces in my pack for fire starter.

That I know of there is nothing else that starts fire as well. Unless you can throw a match on gasoline.
