candles
Posted by akflyfisher on Mar 08 2006
I also carry at least one candle in my survivale pack. You use one match to start the candle and use it to start the fire.
Some tricks to use in wet weather is to strip the bark from alder twigs and they will light much easier, if there is any birch near by the bark is a great fire starter, wet or dry.
If you are in SE AK make sure you build your fire on rocks. Once the ground below your fire dries out it will burn and then drop down and get soaked from the water in the ground.
Just some stuff I learned from Survival Doug and Jim out of Sitka. They teach a one week course that you spend at least three days out in the wilds with only a sandwich bag of supplies. I still carry the same stuff that they taught me and I know I can survive for three days out of that bag!
