batteries (AA for GPS)
emergency space blanket (more for use on the roof of a shelter)
Whistle
cord
water purification tablets
air activated heater pack

This set up is designed to keep you alive if and when you get lost. After spending three days on a remote island with just these items I feel confident that this small list of items will keep me alive. Having confidence that you will survive is half the battle. One addition items that I would recomend if you don't normally carry a saw with you is a pocket chain saw. They are spendy but work great (if you get the good ones).
