I suspect that there may be some truth to the concern that counting methods have changed.  I haven’t looked into it lately, but it is true that new technologies and new methods of estimating populations are constantly appearing.

Still, my guess is that the broad range of estimate means that the bulk of the population is estimated using low precision methods.  And that probably means the estimating methodology hasn’t changed much.  And, I’d be surprised to find that fairly obvious issue hadn’t been taken into account.

I’ve thought the same as you about CWD and other wildlife diseases.  If there were more predators, wouldn’t there be less disease?  My guess is that the reintroduction of large predators in the northern and western states is going to have some benefits along that line.  It’s raising other problems – like when is the reintroduction “too successful”, but that’s another issue.
