Have shot both...

Not at the same time, but I have shot a Ruger .44 and the Super Red Hawk .480.  I like the versatility of the 480, and will be looking for that gun when I purchase my fishing/hiking pistol. As far as recoil, they are close but I would have to agree with what you heard, the 480 is a little less when shooting comparable loads; and there is more power with the .480 (ballistics).
I guess my opinion is what is going to get the job done when I need it. With adrenaline running on high when a bear is too close, recoil wont matter; not betwee those two choices.
