That's what I have and I love it. Like S2K said, its a bitch to pack. I have left it at camp too. If I were in the market for a hiking gun I would get a 4" .44.

Great Northern Guns sells a holster that allows you to carry the gun on your chest vs. on the hip or shoulder. This should improve packability exponentially.

I bought mine for hiking too, (years ago) not realizing that it would be such a pain to pack. I carry it when I am fishing or hiking, and hunting. I shoot 305 grain buffalo bore bullets. In my opinion, Rugers are good, reliable guns. I can't help you with the .480 though, never shot/owned one.
