Heavy Bullets in .338 cal.
Posted by Rick Smith on Mar 13 2006
Woodleigh makes a 300 gr. hunting bullet for the .338 bore. It's a round nose though and therefore not conducive for long range work. It can be found at www.midwayusa.com

Richard Graves, of Wildcat Bullets (Canada) makes a 300 gr. hunting bullet of very high B.C. and also a 350 gr. hunting bullet of same design. These can be found at www.wildcatbullets.com ; or  www.wildcatbullets.homestead.com

Most barrels of .338 cal. have a 1:10" twist and thus 300 gr. bullets are about the heaviest that can be stabilized. You will need a faster twist for anything beyond that.

I concur with the others about long range shooting of game animals. Three hundred yards is plenty for most of us under most field conditions. Under the most ideal conditions 400 yards might be considered maximum for the bulk of us. There are a few that practice a lot and can make a longer shot but you'll have to be the judge of your own abilities and restrict yourself to stay within your own limitations.

Good Shooting, Rick
