I can't speak for other carriers, but Alaska Airlines' policy expressly forbids our agents from directly handling customers' firearms in any way shape or form.  They will ask you if it's unloaded, and you must remove the bolt or leave the action open if the bolt cannot be removed, but they're not going to check it themselves.

I don't think this is what you are saying, but I just wanted to clarify in case someone thought one of our folks would actually be verifying that the weapon is in fact unloaded.  The bottom line is that they're taking your word for it at the present time.
