Dried noodles, etc.
Posted by B_M on Mar 15 2006
I'm not sure if Snowwolfe was talking about Ramen noodles, but I would strongly recommend against them if you're doing any hiking at all.  They have few calories and are completely devoid of any other nutrients.  I'm guessing he was talking about the Lipton noodle packets - creamy garlic, alfredo, etc.  These have more calories and are more filling.  Ramen is fine if you just need something to warm your belly, but it's woefully inadequate as a main course.  I used to bring it along, though.  We'd mix it with Uncle Ben's boil-in-the-bag rice (no mess) and mix it with some marinated ground squirrel meat on sheep hunts.  Those ground squirrels have more fat than meat, but once you clean them they're pretty tasty...as long as you're generous with the teryaki seasoning.  :)  Ramen is a fine side dish or mix-in, but nothing more.

One thing I'm wondering is why you're concerned about weight.  Are you flying in?  Most hunts in the Sound are by boat, and in this case weight is of little concern.  Nothing like bringing along a few luxuries in the food department when weight isn't an issue.  Or maybe you're hiking to the tops of the islands?  For a good steak dinner I'd make a second trip up from the beach.  If you're flying, though, I understand.
