Have you hunted there?

With all respect Rob, Kodiak deer hunting can vary considerably concerning terrain and opportunities. Its pure fallacy to say that the deer hunting there is all brush shooting with a brush gun--total fiction. Think about the wonderful moonscape there that many goats call home for starters. Often deer frequent those same areas.
I've been there when virtually no deer were down in the brush but rather up high in the very open and rugged areas--much like the draws and cooleys of Montana. Long shots at wary bucks in the open country are very common, probably the norm cetain times of year. If you have been there then you know this. I'm not talking 500 yards mind you, 200-265 yards?? ABSOLUTELY! Thats my personal comfort and proficiencey zone. I have no idea what your's might be.
And the hunter in question would take issue with your assumption that he was irresponsible. (Not that I have.) He had a large barren background hillside with a bewildered buck that had long winded us, which he ultimately bagged. The echo of his shots on the far ridge actually worked in his favor by confusing the large buck and keeping him on our high ridge of the horsehoe valley.
The shot was long, probably 265-270, and he bagged his buck. A flat shooting gun wouldve dispensed with the deer quicker. My 300 win mag would have done him in one shot at that distance.
My buddy feared bears and bought his peacemaker. I think a 338 Ultra wouldve done a far better job as per my initial post.
Regards, Frank
