100% entry and exit...
Posted by Brian Richardson on Mar 17 2006
More often than not - I have enjoyed one shot drops in their tracks from all sorts of calibers both handguns, rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders, including bow/arrows and for whatever reason the striking average over all these years seems to be 110 paces away. Using guns… Yes - some taken at extended ranges while others up very close, but so many times I walk 110 paces and there it dropped.
9 times out of 10 with handguns, rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders, or bow/arrows the one shot drops exhibiting 100% clear through penetration (entry & exit) plus I’ve been fortunate not to hardy ever damage meat. I’ll tell you that I put placement emphasis on crushing front shoulder shots. This strategy (9 out of 10 for me) results in one or two shoulders and all vitals removed from the running away equation.
On Moose I do identify w/ the 99% penetration (only one entry hole) resting against the opposite side hide being very common even w/ tough bullets. One thing I’ll say was a very noticeable difference I witnessed on 3 different equal sized Moose and that the KO factor of good shot placements in front shoulder & heart and lung shots using the .3OO WIN. (two simultaneous shots to lungs and heart and ran aways), .375 H&H (one shot striking the front shoulder coming to rest and a recovered trophy bonded against the far shoulders hide walked 10 -15 yards), and a 458 WIN MAG… no comparison - the .458 WIN MAG w/ a clear pass though low to the heart was the clear winner at immediately toppling the Moose were it stood like Holstein-tippin’ on a farm. No black and white outcomes, next 3 could blow the stats, but this is my experience.
I say accurate shot placement - one entry one exit - and a little more oomph for insurance. There are more killing influences than figuring penetration and bullet expansion alone. You’ve also got to credit the total wound area volume length x width), and significance of hydrostatic damage through the bullets pass through. I have not had any runners lately and not a one ever got out of my sight entirely… but if I had to track??? Certainly an entry and exit have better potential to be more desirable in my opinion by making a wider more vivid trail to follow.
