If you don't get passthroughs on broadsides...
Posted by Paul H on Mar 18 2006
Then you don't have enough penetration for bones or quartering shots.

In an ideal world, you'd always have the perfect broadside shot presented, you'd always place the shot in the lungs or hear, the bullet would go off like a grenade totally destroying the vitals, and the animal drops at the shot, or walks slowly for 10 paces and drops.

But we live, hunt and shoot in an imperfect world.  Because of that, my preference is to use a little bigger caliber, a heavyish bullet, and either keep muzzle veolocities milder or go with stoutly constructed bullets.  That way I have something that will work for broadside soft or bone shots, quartering shots, an don't strain the bulle to the point that should it not quite hold together, I have a shallow non-fatal wound.

Because of my conservative nature, I choose a combo that won't be as dramatic as a bullet that won't make it through the soft broadside shot, but I have something I trust will work in the conditions I prefer, as well as the conditions I'm presented with.

There is no wrong answer, pick what works for you.
