I have always used the Garmin GPS units.  I currently have a Etrex Venture and just also won a Etrex Legend.  Their website is pretty informative and will give you an idea of what each unit does. Their basic Etrex model, which I have seen for under $100 bucks would probably serve your son well. The units I have are very easy to use!
