RR, There are alot of GPS models out there with alot of features. Personally, for hunting, I like something that shows me where I am in relation to where I have been and helps me return. Keep it simple method. All the maps and stuff are great if you are a travelling salesman but to me, aren't usefull in the wilderness.

I don't like the "breadcrumb" feature because I have found it doesn't help me take the direct route back to camp. If I encounter a landscape feature, like a lake, that I would rather not swim accross on my way back to camp I will mark a waypoint in the area I went through to help me get back. This is hard to describe without writing a book but basically when navigating/hunting in the wilderness I am always thinking of where I am going in relation to what route I want to take to get back to camp and periodically verifying this with my compass and map as well.

Whatever your son gets he will need to become very familar with it prior to his trip.

I would also reccomend something that is waterproof, for obvious reasons.

Lastly. Can't emphasize enough to not rely on the GPS for navigation. Batteries can die and electronic tools can break. My hunting partner found out the hard way last year on a hunt with me. A scary situation for awhile. I got him back to camp using my map, compass and a radio....long story but really emphasized the point for us.
