Yukon moose hunters have really lost the battle n
Posted by 375ultramag on Mar 22 2006
So all of unit 21D is now going permit only. The rest will be registration and cut your antlers.

The reasons stated were declining moose populations and increased hunter activity.

This was a proposal put in by the Middle Yukon Advisory Committee and they basically don't want anyone hunting the area unless you live in Galena, Nulato, Kaltag or in the area.

IMO there is plenty of moose as we go over there every year and tag out. We also hunt by ourselves and receive little if any preasure.

The biologist lives in Galena and is right there with the MYAC helping them keep the non locals out of his area by posting trend counts and surveys I don't agree with.

I am no biologist but I have been hunting an area that supposedly has no mature bulls because of over harvest and heavy hunting preassure. Taken straight from the lips of the biologist.

Last year our group killed a 50,55'56'57,58 snd a 62" bull in an area and seen one other boat in our area. So I would not call that heavy hunting preasure. The Year before in an area that was a little ways a way There was 3 of us taking bulls over 50" with 4 brow tines. This year we only seen 2 other passing by boats hunting from the river.

Not once in my last 4 years have I seen anyone out of a boat hunting by foot and have seen very few boats actually out hunting where we go.

So I can't agree with him that there is no mature bulls and heavy hunting preasure.

I am disgusted with the whole deal the way it turned out. I think it is a shame that this has happend.

If the facts were correct and there were not many moose there I could agree with it. But this simply is not the case.

Next: basing moose densities on personal data bushrat Mar 23 2006
