old vs new O conner vs Keith.
Posted by Father of 2 on Mar 22 2006
I grew up on the theory that the bullet needed to expend all it's energy inside the animal. I might not be able to give you as much theory as some of the others, but I can give you experience.

My father was a man whom preached the Keith side of the equation to me. He has hunted with a 7mm Mag for the last 20 years. I still shoot his favorite .338. Killing power? All the animals from deer to grizzly have not seemed to notice. Close wounded Brown Bear, sure the .338 is more prudent.  However the modern bullet is amazing in its performance. My brother was a great moose hunter with a .270 with proper bullets. My father never felt the need to replace his 7mm with another .338(which he lost).

Due to experience I prefer the Failsafe and A frames in my rifle for most distances. Great energy transfer with great penetration. Even though they go through a moose they seem to do their job. Bears do not seem to notice as well. I must admit I use partitions on deer and caribou as the do not do so much damage.

With that being said shot placement IS#1.  Witnessed a 300 ultramag take many shots to drop a moose. (caliber and bullet choice were not at fault)? My kid brother drops moose at twice the range with his .270.
