Wildlife management

Perhaps most states use the equivalent of area biologists because there is no better way to obtain local wildlife population information, understand local concerns and communicate conservation concepts in the local area.
It is the area biologist’s job to communicate local concerns into the wildlife management system of the state. If the biologist is doing the job well, that will include both obtaining good wildlife population information and the really hearing concerns of the local populace. The AB is the eyes and ears and mouth of the management system at the local level.
Decisions about how the wildlife will be managed are made at the regional and state level, however – at least on state lands. That is the job of Division of Wildlife Conservation supervisors and the Alaska Board of Game.
There’s no point in getting upset with an area biologist. It’s like getting mad at the state trooper who pulls one over for drunk driving. He or she is just doing the job that is laid out for him by statute, regulation and state policy. Like the trooper, the job is sometimes not much fun because one is so often caught in the middle.
If a person doesn’t agree with the AB’s data, that person should assemble information that shows it to be inaccurate. Mistakes are possible, and better information is always useful.
The appropriate forum for addressing issues like this is the Alaska Board of Game. The hunting proposals have been public since January. If you or I or anyone else doesn’t like what is being proposed, we better be involved in the Board of Game process. Coming now and saying that the AB doesn’t have it right is way too late.
