Some Info
Posted by mtnman on Mar 23 2006
Okay, I worked as an assistant guide out there for seven year for the guide everyone loves to hate.. He's a good guy and very good at what he does.  He is a very good bush pilot and specializes in glacier landings. Thats a big reason why his guides kill some very nice sheep.. Now there is a lot of scuttlebutt about why this or that air-taxi doesn't fly into those area's and the most popular is that they all have a handshake agreement with him not to drop hunters into "HIS" hunting area.. Well, you can believe that bunch of horse pucky if you want to but the fact of the matter is that those air taxi pilots neither have the desire or the skill to get you into those area's.  I know Kelly Green will do drop offs in two places off the Bernard.. One is at Huberts landing at the head of the Chitina and the other is way the heck up on the white ice of the Bernard.. From either place you have a very long trek indeed if you want to get to the "GOOD" hunting grounds.. You better be very skilled in glacier travel and at least have moderate mountaineering skills.  Try traveling 20-30 miles of some of the most rugged sheep country in the world with ten days of food and camp on your back.. Others have done it so by all rights you can to but the fact is that there are a lot easier places to get a dall sheep in a lot safer parts of Alaska.. Don't waste your time.  It took three years of hunting in that country for 30-40 days per season before said outfitter would cut me loose in the nasty stuff.. I'll say its an awsome country and very very big and the first time you go in those area's you will be humbled and say to yourself "WOW"!  I was lucky.  I had a very good pilot who could get me a lot closer than an airtaxi ever could and every hunt I did was a ball buster.. If your wanting to go into that country using an air taxi, Good Luck!  Also, you might want to start eating your Wheaties, start a healthy regiment of mountain climbing with heavy loads and get on a regular intake of steroids cause you are going to need it.
