i hate to say this man, but it sounds like you got cleaned. i do know of a few cub pilots who actually limit gear to 35lbs...having spent some time in a cub, i can tell you this is a gimick for flying extra flights. depending on the runway and how scared the pilot is you can fly a cub topped off with rocks if you can get it off the ground.
I came across cook inlet in a cub with three total grown men, a black bear and meat, two barneys backpacks with gear in them and two bags of garbage.. roughly 1000 lbs. i laughed when i got in...but stopped laughing after 100 yards and in the air...
the guys i've flown with will get you, gear and a bear off a strip in around 200 feet. but every pilots different.
