I spend many days in the field photographing bears every year. And many days hunting and fishing as well. If one charges you and you have to shoot it you will most likely only have time for one aimed shot as it is running towards you. If you shoot a "charging" bear more than say 10-15 yards or so you will never convince F&G you were in danger as they bluff charge frequently.
Be ready, be cool, and fire only when necessary. I have never had to fire at a charging bear and I lived here since 1977. The only time I thought I was truly charged was by a black bear down at the Russian river. When the bear was about 5 yards away I screamed and waved my arms and it detoured into the woods off the path. If I had been carrying I would of shot it. But it would of been a waste of an animal. I bet a charging bear can cover 30 yards from a standing start in under 3 seconds.
