Got too close to a brownie cub (walking out in the near-dark) couple years ago and had mama come at me from 40 yards--no bluff.  I got one shotgun slug in her at about 10 feet, but didn't stop her.  She took me down, but I still had the shotgun and pumped another into her while she had my leg in her mouth.  She let go and I put one more into her before she ran off and died.  They are tough and cover ground fast...
