Get some training
Posted by AK Ray on Mar 28 2006
Steve Nelson and Dennis Bromley have a business that offers bear "safety" training to industry types. I have had three different classes over the years and theirs is the best. Dennis is in the book.

One of the things that they do that is way too much fun is the charging bear drill. They have a cart pulled by a car towards the shooter. The "bear" starts at 25 yards and is going at 20 MPH. By the time the bear gets to your position on the firing line you may have had the time to shoot twice. It is really fun to watch first timers. It is not fun if the passenger in the car does not let go of the pull rope soon enough and the "bear" runs over you. Of course if you are don't move out of the way it is your own fault.

At any rate, this drill is really fun to show you what you need to practice on. The most valuable thing it taught me was that you never to bear duty with a weapon that you don't know well. I used a 870 that was slicked up by WWG with a mushroom safety button. I have been shooting 870s for over 20 years and my finger could not find the safety button from memory feel. I was a "dead" geologist on that run. That day I used two guns I have never shot before and I never "killed" the bear, only wounded it with one of the marlin lever guns. After I saw what Steve could do with his Red Hawk I realized that I need a lot more practice.

If you don't see the bear coming you will have only 5 seconds to react so make your first shot count.
