[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] salt water Posted by Ol Grouch on Mar 29 2006 If your rifle has stainless metal and composition stock and it gets salted, simply wash it down with plenty of fresh water then hose down well with a moisture displacing oil such as WD-40, stand it muzzle down until water and WD-40 drains off, then wipe out the bore and wipe off exterior excess. Generally if I've gotten well sloshed wioth salt water on a day trip I hose the offended weapon down with a garden hose, then apply the moisture displacing oil. I've done that lots of times. However, having lived on the coast for nearly 40 years I can tell you it is pretty hard to keep any metal from rusting, corroding or staining. Salt water is nasty stuff for metal. And if you get your gun case wet with sea water, might as well discard it because there is no way of removing the salt from it. I've tried the bath tub, leaving out in the rain, even submerging in a creek, but they will still cause rust.
