Buy a cheap can of satin (so it dont Shine) polyurethane spray paint, spray all exposed parts. When you get home take the wife's nail polish remover and strip it with cotton balls and it should be good as new.  Salt, water or air can penetrate the layer of thin clear paint.  Do mine every couple of years with next to no rust, and many a trips.
