Hunting around salt water
Posted by twodux on Mar 29 2006
Living in Cordova, most of my hunting is around salt water. And As most of you know we get plenty of rain on top of that. Of my two main guns, one is stainless, and one is blued. Stainless is a little more forgiving, but not rust-proof when salt water is involved. If spray isn't involved, just wipe your gun down at the end of the day as normal(I use an oily rag)and you'll be fine. If your gun has taken salt spray, rinse it with fresh water as soon as possible, then wipe dry and use the oily rag. The main thing is, don't let 'em sit if they had contact with salt water, even for a short time. Important places to clean extra hard are your scope rings and anything metal on your sling set-up. Whatever metal they use seems to rust faster than the rest of the gun, open sights seem to rust fast too.

I've had several guns survive being dunked in salt water including one  that fell off my boat at high tide that I got back at low tide and it was 90% buried in sand when I found it. I gave it an initial rinsing in fresh water and took it home and soaked it several times in the bathtub to get all the sand and salt out of it. I did have to replace the scope on that gun as it got moisture inside.

When you get home, take your stock off anc clean everything thoroughly before you store your gun and you should be fine.
