Whatever, just so its accessable all the time

I pack a 4" S&W 629 44 mag,  it is a small package with a fair punch. I use a 275 grain bullet. I have one shot kills on  Deer, Elk and Moose with this gun. Wouldn't hesitate shooting a bear with it. But, I have to tell you, I have over a 250.000 rounds out of pistols and have compete as a master in several shooting disaplines. If I had  to shoot a bear that wants to eat me I would much perfer a shotgun or rifle over any handgun.

Bigger handguns then the 629 are a pain to pack, in my opinion. May as well pack a short barreled shotgun. Most people do not have the skills required to put down a charging bear with a pistol of any caliber. But here is my spin on why packing one, even if it is a minimal caliber, may be a wise thing to do.

It is called confidence. I believe that bears or any animal 2 or 4 legged can sense that confidence and tend to have second thoughts when confronted with it. Your confidence increases with practice. So shoot a lot with the handgun you chose for selfdefense. Shooting 44 special out of your magnum are cheap and way more pleasant to shoot. The 454 is a very good cartrigde so don't let my thoughts scare you away from it. Just remember a 454 casul in the paw  of a charging bear is less effective then .22 long rifle though its eyeball.

The 4' 626 is concealable, which is how I carry mine strong side on the belt. I carry crossdraw often also. Im a big guy 6.1 240lbs a smaller weapon may be more appropriate for you. Concealable I feel is the best way to pack , as surprise will be your best freind when confronted by 2 legged animals. In my opinion, you are more likely to be confronted with a 2 legged animal wishing you harm then you would by any 4 legged animal.
