Practice technique
Posted by Ed M on Oct 16 2003
From my other post I mentioned I use my pistol when backpacking.  Here is how I practice.

I keep the pistol holstered on my pack waist belt. I have a creek with steep banks on my property.  I also have a few basketballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls I collected over the years from trash heaps and garage sales.  I go down to the creek with my pack on and a 50 lb bag of sand in it.

I will throw the ball as hard as I can up the bank and as it bounces back towards me I unholster, draw, and shoot at it.  Very similar to a bears head coming toward you.

Maybe in the beginning you should have someone else throw the ball but eventually you want to throw it.  The practice of going from one activity to another while trying to get at your gun quickly is very valuable.  It is not as effective if you are just waiting for the ball to come to you.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!!! THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO PRACTICE!!!  but so is a bear in an all out attack!  YOU MAY BE AMAZED TO FIND OUT HOW EASILY THE GUN DISCHARGES WHEN YOU ARE EXCITED AND VERY RUSHED TO GET THE GUN ON TARGET!!!

I speak from personal experience.  I give thanks to God for still having all the fingers on my left hand that I use to guide the gun up into position.  With a 4" ported barrel, the tip of the barrel is still inside the palm of your left hand as you bring it up.
