Depending on what I'm hunting, where I'm hunting, and what I'm using as my primary hunting firearm, determines what I'm going to take as my sidearm.  In areas where potential danger comes from bears or cougar, or when I'm using a "light rifle" such as my 7x57 or .308, I usually pack my .44 mag.  In areas where such danger is nonexistent but the potential of unpleasantness comes in 2-legged variety, I pack a .357 mag or .45 acp.
   I think the bottom line is - if you don't feel comfortable packing a handgun or feel that it is an item of incumberance, then don't pack one.  Treadwell never packed one.
