Excellent Points, Joe
Posted by Mark on Oct 18 2003
I had a dog charge me this fall. I didn't even have time to kick the $hit out of him before his owner came out of the brush. They were both protecting a great hunting promenade for a huge party (and I do mean party) of Fairbanks guys in a motorhome city parked in a gravel pit on the Elliot Highway. They were tag-teaming the spot. When the season ended, I tallied one moose for about 30 party animals.

I'll bet the dog got nothing but dry (wet?) dog food. I don't blame him for being so grouchy.

But I can guarantee that if that GI hadn't come out of the brush to rescue him, I'd have either rifle butted or pistol-whipped that silly dog.

No need to shoot the silly thing. It was just a damned dog.

But I do have a good life insurance policy. And I carry a 357 mag. I don't think I'd save the last round for myself. I'm pumping them all into whatever gives me the legal right to do so, and with prejudice.

You're right: no guarantees that we'll come home safe. In fact, I'm the world's worse accident waiting to happen. I'm always getting shot, falling off cliffs, busting myself up on hunting rigs, etc. My health insurance company has given up on me suing anybody for my injuries. I'm always either to blame, or the one who shoots me is a poverty striken idiot.

Bears? I've only been charged once. A warning shot was all it took to end that. Still, my knees shook for only the second time in my life.
It was too fast to believe.

But I still won't go anywhere without my sidearm. It's just good, cheap insurance.
