It is more of a sarcastic remark for people who have a preference for a pistol or think they can accomplish the same thing with it so they get into a bad habit of leaving their rifle somewhere inconvenient. His real point is to always have your rifle with you and AT MOST be only two steps from it. Why go down the power curve? And, it's much easier to aim with a rifle. If you believe there is a high probability of getting mauled, why not bring the biggest baddest thing you can legally carry and control.
