300 vs 300
Posted by Murphy on May 02 2006
Planner,

I don't necessarily prefer the 300 WM to the 300 WSM.  I think that post was about the Win Mag.  They are two different animals, from a design point of view but any and all 30 cal magnums are pretty much the same in the field.  I mean from a hunter's view point.  One won't do any more than another, I mean take bigger tougher, critters, except to say at longer range and handle bigger bullets better, etc.

I do like the 300 WSM.  It is not the exact ballistic equal of the tauted 300 Win Mag but is is a step up from the 30-06 and can be had in a very compact and portable package.  The 300 Win Mag is going to be hard to dethrone.  It has very good credits from field and target line.  The 300 WBY, 308 Norma, 300 RUM, 300 Arnold, Lapua, Whatever all have their fans but one of the things that make the Winnie so good is ammo...everywhere you turn, there it is.  The WSM is gaining ground in that regard but not there yet.  It is a good caliber and will probably survive, alone, without the 7mm, 270 and 325 WSM's, which I think will fizzle and die.

Ballistically, my 300 WSM with it's 24 3/8" barrel will duplicate the velocity of my 30-06 Ackley, but is not as accurate.  This Ackley is a 1/2" gun with many bullets.  And will launch 180 grains at 2900-2925 fps, the WSM will get there but with more powder. Not all Ackley conversions are this good. I've had four of them and and this is just a super shooter.  The barrel is like a baby's butt.  Perfect chamber and crown, good stuff.  I guess I can find something good about all of them. I like guns, good shootin'.
