6.5mm - 284 is best!
Posted by Brian Richardson on May 04 2006
Looks like you may be reloading for the 6.5mm!

On that note - no question here... I'd go 6.5-284.

Velocities will be high 2800 to mid 2900 fps in the 140 grain range.

You said 300 yarders (that's not too far for any of the 6.5s)

Like Murphy said - a .243 WIN would be fine for this yardage and game class.

I'd stay away from the 6.8 SPC as a hunting cartridge --- there are simply way better selections old and new.  I also would not shy away from high BC 7mm.

If you worry about throat erosion, bbl. life etc. you should maybe consider polygonal rifling that has been shown to reduce throat wear (Schneider is the bbl. manufacturer)

Short bbl. life is a thing you'll have to live with... if you go hotrodding a 6.5 - it will be necessary to keep the gun super clean of fouling, eventually throat polish, recrowning, or set back the bbl. over time.  Keep in mind, yet another way is to cut and recrown so your 20" bbl maybe a 19" or 18" after a 1000 rounds or so.

Hope this helps -

Brian Richardson
