First on barrel life- A quality barrel will help and top, accurate barrel life is in inverse relation to the velocity and amount of powder.

As to suitablility of the 6.5s for the game you describe out to 300 yards, even with the 20 inch barrel- I would think that those brought up here would do well and be plenty of gun. That class of animal is relatively small so the biggest danger would be tearing one up with high impact velocity with a frangible bullet. The tougher bullets are not needed for penetration or quick killing the animal in this case but more for not over doing it. Accuracy and shooting ability will be the premiums. Just don't overlook the premium 120-125s for this use if they turn out to be the better shooters.
