I have gone on 2 hunts with Matt Snyder and his family. His mother and stepfather live next door and they have hunted and lived there for about 25-30 years, so believe me, they know the area and are renowned sheep hunters. They hunt the famous Tok management area and its surrounding mountains. Their area has an abundance of sheep there, and there is no reason other than injury or weather that should keep you from getting a sheep.
I went in 98 when I was 51 years old and finally decided to go sheep hunting before I was too old. It was my first and only hunt, but I did get a great trophy of 38 1/2 inches. It was really a beautiful animal and was alot of luck to get such a dandy on my first try. We also saw several others while there. The other neat thing about the hunt was that I also never saw any other hunters.
The next hunt I went on with Matt was a moose hunt in 2001 and we also hunted near the same area as the sheep hunt. I was along with my nephew and didn't hunt, but was there to help pack the meat out and just be with my nephew on his first trip to Alaska. Once again, we did great and got a big 61 inch bull with brow tines of 4 and 5 per side. Another real trophy.
I don't think you can find any other outfitter that can do any better job than Matt, and the area you will be hunting has an excellent population of game. The whole family works to make your hunt successful. When you get out of the mountains and back to their place, the best is yet to come. Matt's mom, Sue, does things with the wild game that will make you think you are eating prime rib. Their hospitality will stick in your mind forever.
Matt also has an airplane that allows him to scout the mountains just prior to your arrival, to further line up your game species and get you closer to the animals. They also will be doing a FNAWS show near Harrisburg in Feb, I think, and you could talk to them directly and get the feel for their personalities, etc and also look at their scrap books of previous hunts.
I also think you should give me a call and talk about the hunt in more detail and I can be alot more specific and give you some good tips about the hunt. It is a great trip whether you go to Fairbanks or Anchorage it doesn't matter. There is some great scenery on the way to
Tok ....... Believe me, you will love this hunt.
