Alaska
brown bear hunts

by Alaska Hunting Adventures

  • Hunt Brown Bears with us on the Copper River by boat from Chitina
  • Hunts are $12,000 for a 7-day hunt

Fall 2003: Doug Eilertson from Texas and his Copper River brown bearThis remote area of the lower Copper River is well populated with bears.   Brown bears concentrate on the river in the fall because of the prolific Copper River salmon runs. We normally see as many as 10 - 30 bears!

We travel through the wild and scenic Chugach Mountains full of glaciers and rugged terrain meandering through glacial-fed river bottoms by boat. This area is often visited in the summer months due to it's spectacular views. The run to the hunt area is about 3-4 hours. We regularly see eagles, seals, mountain goats, black bears, and other birds and small mammals. The climate is more rainy and windy than Alaska's interior weather -- but big bears like it here.

We make a comfortable tent camp, then travel the river bars to good areas to find the bears. These bear hunts require a lot of glassing and patience before making the final stalk. Sue's fine home cooking is a great reward at the end of a long day of glassing the country...or bringing home the big guy.

We're not hunting these guys...but they are fun to see, nevertheless. Hunter Doug Eilertson got within 15 feet of this guy.You will quickly see that bears are numerous in this river system. Traveling by boat gives us huge area to glass for bears. The mountains are steep.  This is perfect: it allows us quickly to view more river bottoms for bears.

Dates for the hunt are September 21 - October 10 depending upon availability.

This hunt is operated by Alaska registered guides Matt Snyder, Sue Entsminger, or assistant guide Dean Wilson. Matt & Sue run Alaska Hunting Adventures. Matt has been brown bear guiding on the Alaska peninsula for many years. Sue has wide Alaska -- and even international -- hunting experience. Both Matt and Sue have operated boats on the water for most of their lives. Dean has lived in the area all of his life and has hunted the area since his youth. Dean & Matt operate boats commercially on the Copper River in the summer for Glacier River Tours.

To take part in this wilderness hunt, you will need to travel to Anchorage, then to Glennallen where we will meet you. Travel to Glennallen is either by bus [Alaska Direct] 800-770-6652 (operates Wed. Fri. Sun.] or Ellis Air Service or by rental car. When we meet you, we will drive together to Chitina from where we will travel by boat on the Copper River to the hunt area.

Call us at 907-883-2833 (Sue) or 907-883-3083 (Matt) for more information. If you cannot get an answer, please leave a message on Matt's cell phone 907-632-5315.
