Alaska is COLD in the winter, of course.  However, the reality is that except for the darkest days of mid-winter and the very coldest periods, the opportunities for winter sports in Alaska are many.

Snowmachining is perhaps most popular as a sport, perhaps because the snowmachine has long been an important transportation workhorse.  Skiing -- both cross-country and downhill are popular, too.
