Outdoors Directory is supported mostly by advertising revenue. But unlike other sites that offer shallow content in order to draw potential customers, our site specializes in long-form content that meets the needs of our readers for relevant, accurate, and timely information. Affiliate Marketing

Outdoors Directory is a member of several affiliate networks and we would be happy to discuss adding yours to our site. We have close to 160,000 pages here, many of which are filled with specific brand-name product recommendations. These take the form of recommendations in our forums, recommendations by authors on the site, gear reviews and many others. Our affiliate partners receive broad exposure to their goods and services, and the good news is that you don't pay until a sale is generated!

Our directory is the heart of our site, and the main reason many customers come here in the first place. If your business is focused on the Alaska outdoors, there's really no reason not to be listed in our directory. A basic listing is free; what's not to like about that?

Premium Listings

Premium listings appear at the top of our Directory, and receive thousands of views per year, from potential customers. A custom rotating banner ad also appears in various places on our site. Banner ads are placed in a pool where they rotate with other similar ads. Here's how it works:

 Verbiage. Send us up to 90 words for the advertisement

 Artwork. Send us an image to use for the ad. If you don't already have an ad built, we can do that for you at no additional charge.

 Cost. Premium ads cost $145 per year for the first category in which they appear. You can list your ad in additional categories for $55 per category, per year.

 Automatic renewal. Your premium ad will automatically renew each year unless specified at the time of purchase. You will receive advance notification of renewal.

Regional and Area Sponsor Advertisements; top level

Many visitors and regulars go to our “Regions” pages when they first come to our site (note that the state is divided into five regions). They are looking specifically for businesses that operate in that area. This top level ad appears toward the top of the screen when a person first clicks on that page, assuring good visibility. We offer a limited number of sponsors for each of our areas, and if there are other sponsors, your ad will appear in rotation with theirs. Regional and Area Sponsor Advertisements; lower level

We offer a limited number of listings on our “Regions” pages, which typically appear toward the bottom of the page, in rotation with other region page ads. Here's how it works:

Graphics. Send us a photo or graphic that can be used for the ad. If you don't have something that's ready, don't worry; we can do the graphics work for you at no additional charge. 

Verbiage. We work with you on the text for the ad; usually one paragraph is sufficient.

Cost. Regional Page lower level ads are $85 a year.

Renewal. Your ad will renew automatically every year, unless other arrangements are made in advance. You will be notified via email about two weeks prior to renewal.

Banner Ads

Clickable banner ads appear in our forums, and receive tens of thousands of views each month, and build name recognition even when people may not click through to your website. We limit the number of banners allowed in each forum, in order to offer you good visibility. All banners go into a pool for that forum, and rotate every time the page is refreshed. So your ad will not appear every time, but as often as possible in rotation. Here is how the banner ad program works:

Graphics. Send us a photo or graphic that can be used for the ad. If you don't have something that's ready, don't worry; we can do the graphics work for you at no additional charge.

Dimensions. Banners are wide; 234px wide x 60px high, 72 dpi.

Animation. Some animation is permitted, but is limited to three rotations.

Cost. Regional Page lower level ads are $120 a year. No discounts are offered for multiple banners.

Placement. Because we have limited space in our forums, banner ad slots are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. If the forum you want is filled, we will suggest alternatives that offer you the traffic you need. Some advertisers choose to place banners in multiple forums, but remember that there is no discount for multiple placements.

Our forums are the most active area of our site, by far. Forum sponsorship offers some of the best visibility on our entire site. Our bookstore contains the largest online collection of books and DVD titles focused exclusively on the Alaska outdoors. We place your printed advertising materials with our customer orders. For example, if a customer orders a book or a DVD on fishing in Prince William Sound, we might include flyers from charter boat operators, lodges, and flying services in that area, along with manufacturers of salmon and halibut tackle. The mix of flyers is contextualized to the location or subject of the item the customer purchases. How Many Hits Do You Really Get?

It is reasonable to ask any webmaster with which you propose to advertise "just how many visitors do you get, anyway?"  It's important to distinguish between hits, page views and visitors. We get a LOT of hits.
