Starting
to think about gifts for the angler on your list? Our
tip this month may strike some mental sparks for
you.
Electric fencers are the buzz in outdoors Alaska today. While
it's important to remember the limitations of these fences, they are
worth considering for camps in bear country. In
this month's news, and in
late October's news you'll find links
to articles and forum discussion on the subject.
If there is a woman in your life that you would like to introduce to
the Outdoors -- or if you are yourself a woman wanting to learn some
new outdoor skills -- consider the
Becoming an OutdoorsWoman (BOW) program put on by the Alaska
Department of Fish and Game. A
winter BOW workshop is planned for March, 2006, and summer
programs are coming.

TIPS
HOLIDAY GIVING IDEAS: Christmas and Hanukah delights for the angler in
your family
November is the time we start to think about the holidays ahead. Family
or friends might be asking what you want, and you are probably looking at
what to buy for them, too. Many of our choices relate to where we live and
what we need, but the good news is that purchases are right at our
fingertips.
The bookstore OutdoorsDirectory.com is a real possibility. If you haven’t
checked out the selection recently, you’ll be surprised at all the new books
and videos. There are now over 50 titles in stock, all dealing with
Alaska
fishing,
Alaska
hunting,
Alaska
travel, or even a few general
Alaskana.
Alaska books are great gifts because the information in them keeps right on
giving.
Nearly any angler would appreciate a new blade or a sharpener to add to his
or her vest. Today's markets offer excellent opportunities in a variety of
fillet knives and the systems to take care of them.
If your fishing friends are on the catch they will always appreciate refills
of the plastic film used by their vacuum processing machines. Competition
among manufactures has resulted in both machines and refills being offered
for even lower prices than they were last year.
Anglers relish up-to-date information about Alaska fishing. A yearly
subscription to a quality magazine that deals directly with this subject
makes a great gift. Some specific to Alaska:
Fish Alaska and
Alaska Magazine (general
Alaskana, with occasional fishing articles).
And don't forget fishing fine art. There are tremendous artists who publish
all the way from t-shirts and cups, to fish pins and limited edition prints.
Sometimes the creative touch is the creative answer. Like maybe a
registration to the
Kenai Fishing Academy? Speaking of imaginations, if your fishing
friends are big in this department then consider a lure making or fly tying
kit that should satisfy them for months.
Or maybe you would like to gift a trip on a halibut or salmon charter. See
the directory of services
on OutdoorsDirectory.com for extensive listings of services.
And finally, for those of you who just can't decide, there is still a
solution. When in doubt, here's your way out: it's called a gift certificate
to an outdoors store. I have yet to meet one I haven't liked!
This month's tip is by Bernard Rosenberg, an Alaska fishing enthusiast and
author and David Johnson, publisher of OutdoorsDirectory.com Rosenberg is a
prolific
poster on the
Alaska
Fishing Forum, and author of
