Tony,
I would think twice about using that setup.  With the jet unit you will have less power & burn more gas & I don't know how the tides  will affect you but it would seem hard to fight them with a jet.  Also there would times when you would get some cavitation as  the jet unit would be sucking air while riding the waves.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who have tried & can give you the best combonation with a small boat / outboard.
