The Alaska |
[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] Alaska Boating Posted by Wichita on Feb 27 2006 I agree with the other posters - Alaska is a different place. Local knoweldge is essential in many places. The tides are strong, and can create rips, the water is cold (may need a little extra air in your zodiak), and there are things to be aware of you might not think about - for instance glacial mud (silt) can be quicksand, glaciers calve off huge chunks that send surge waves out onto inexperienced kayakers. Plan your trip with some good books that talk about local hazards. Prince William Sound and Seward are great places to start.
