Clarification on your plan
Posted by Paul H on Mar 09 2006
Are you being transported out to one of the islands to stay in a cabin or camp and using the inflatable to get around that island, or are you planning to launch from Whittier and take all your gear with you?

I'd say if you're just using it to get around an island, you just need to watch the water and keep to protected coves when you land.  When the water picks up, launching a small boat from shore can be very dangerous.  Friends nearly flipped their 12' zodiac on montague under similar conditions.

If you're talking about leaving out of whittier with such a boat to get you and your camp to an island to hunt, I would advise against such an adventure.  It isn't enough boat to carry your gear under ideal conditions, and downright dangerous if the water picks up.  I'd also say if you were to undertake such an adventure, I'd highly recomend wearing cold water immersion suits or drysuits while boating to your destination.

Good luck, and know there is a saying about folks in Alaska that are just dying to go hunting.  Don't be one of them!
