well as we speak the ice is totally unstable and showing signs of busting up. The lake is so big, that it breaks up in sections. from Quartz creek to the mouth of the kenai river, it is getting really close to opening. but further up it is still in pretty good. In the past I have been on the lake as early as the 25th of April, and one year I did not get on it until the 14th of May, so if we get temps and sunshine, and good winds, you may get on it by the end of the month. if mother nature keeps it cool and cloudy, a week or two later. I was along Snug harbor road the other day and could see a few open spots all along the road, then from the lost lake trail from Rainbow lake I got a good look at that part of the lake and it is still good and white. from Lost lake side  towards seward it is getting alot of slushy look to it.
